Opening Remarks and Keynote - Beyond the Rollercoaster: Empathy, Safety, and the Neuroscience of Change - Dr. Erin Erickson

Care coordinators and primary care teams are facing unprecedented challenges with increasing patient needs and complexity, workforce strain, and pressures to drive behavior change. This session invites participants to step off the "rollercoaster" of outcome-driven care and explore healthier, more sustainable approaches to support behavior change with less burnout. Drawing on neuroscience, trauma‑informed principles, and real‑world clinical experience, this session examines how stress shapes the brain’s capacity for change and why safety, empathy, and presence are foundational for both patient engagement and workforce sustainability. Participants will explore what belongs to the care team and what belongs to the patient, how non‑attachment to outcomes can reduce burnout, and how creating safe space supports improved health outcomes. Attendees will leave with practical insights, and a renewed perspective on how to create meaningful, lasting change for themselves and their patients.
