Conference Puprose:

The POTS and Beyond Conference is designed to advance clinician knowledge and skills in the diagnosis, management, and research of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and related autonomic disorders. This educational activity brings together national experts to present evidence-based strategies, highlight recent advances, and foster collaboration between primary care, specialty care, and research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria for POTS and related autonomic disorders.
  2. Apply evidence-based management strategies tailored to pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients.
  3. Identify comorbidities and overlapping conditions that influence diagnosis and treatment.
  4. Evaluate health system barriers and propose solutions to improve access to care and patient outcomes.

Practice Gaps:

Current practice often leads to delayed recognition, misdiagnosis, and fragmented management of POTS and other autonomic disorders, especially in pediatric and young adult populations. The incidence of POTS among teenagers is estimated at 1 in 100, according to the Mayo Clinic. One study found that approximately 77% of POTS patients were initially misdiagnosed, while another showed that about 67% of U.S. patients reported being told by at least one physician that they had never heard of POTS. These gaps contribute to prolonged diagnostic delays, during which treatment is either postponed or never initiated. A major contributing factor is the lack of formal training in autonomic disorders, leading to wide variability in care and poor patient outcomes. The POTS and Beyond Conference seeks to address these gaps by providing education on diagnostic accuracy, multidisciplinary care approaches, and emerging research.
