Child Support with respect to military servicemembers and veterans
Across Colorado, family-serving professionals are often the first to notice early warning signs of human trafficking, yet those signs can be subtle and easily misunderstood. This session broadens the conversation beyond child sex trafficking to examine the full spectrum of exploitation impacting youth and families, including labor trafficking, forced criminality, online recruitment and grooming, and the heightened vulnerability of unaccompanied minors and youth in informal labor sectors.
Grounded in public health and prevention science, the training focuses on upstream strategies that reduce risk before exploitation occurs. Participants will explore how traffickers use social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps to build trust and isolate young people, and how trafficking intersects with family stressors such as housing instability, substance use, immigration concerns, and prior system involvement. We will also examine how everyday practice decisions can either increase vulnerability or strengthen protective factors.
The session includes key updates to Colorado’s child welfare screening tool and highlights the Child Welfare Human Trafficking Toolkit as a practical resource for identification, assessment, safety planning, and coordinated response. Participants will leave with concrete strategies for asking better questions, documenting concerns, engaging caregivers safely, and responding in trauma-informed ways.
By shifting the focus from crisis response to early recognition and prevention, this session equips family-serving professionals to strengthen families, interrupt exploitation sooner, and build community resilience across Colorado.
This session will discuss the various sources of income included under C.R.S. § 14-10-115 for purposes of determining a parent’s gross income. The presentation will address key considerations such as accelerated versus straight-line depreciation, distinguishing business income from distributions, treatment of expense reimbursements and in-kind payments, and the definition of “ordinary and necessary” business expenses. Participants will also learn how to analyze income tax returns to identify and evaluate relevant sources of income.

Staff will be invited to share experiences, challenges and recommendations to help inform this discussion.
